The Whitley County Colonels and the Corbin Redhounds both saw their 2025 seasons come to a close Thursday evening after a pair of ultra-competitive semifinal round contests in this year’s boys’ 49th District tournament, being hosted by South Laurel.
The Colonels bested the host Cardinals earlier this week, 5-3, to advance to the tournament semifinals. They met up with North Laurel in the semis Thursday, falling in extra time, 3-2. Following that game, the Corbin Redhounds took on Oneida Baptist Institute in what ended up being another nailbiter. In the end, the Hounds fell to the Mountaineers, 4-3, ending their 2025 campaign with an overall record of 8-7-1. Whitley ended their season at 12-8-1.
With their semifinal round victories, OBI and North Laurel will both advance to next week’s boys’ 13th Region championship tournament. Before they enter regional tournament play, they will face each other at South Laurel High School Friday evening with this year’s 49th District championship title on the line. Start time for the game is 8 p.m.
Lady Hounds to play for district title in early game Friday
This year’s girls’ district tournament has come down to North Laurel and Corbin after the Lady Jags defeated Whitley County Wednesday evening, 8-0, and the Lady Hounds survived a scare from South Laurel, 2-1.
The Lady Colonels’ loss to North Wednesday ended their season with an overall record of 9-6-2. Head Coach Nick Shearer will return virtually his entire team next season, so the future looks bright despite the disappointing end to this year’s campaign.
Meanwhile, Coach Hannah Goins’ Lady Hounds will enter Friday’s district title game against the Jags (6 p.m. at SLHS) with a record of 8-10, and they will be looking to avenge a 3-0 defeat that occurred in London back on Sept. 18. Win or lose, Corbin will advance to next week’s 13th Region championship tournament.
