The lights that have been removed from Campbell Field will all find new life.
At a special called meeting of the Corbin Board of Education, the board voted unanimously to donate four of the six poles to the City of Corbin, while moving the remaining two to the track at the high school.
Superintended Dave Cox said Corbin City Manager approached him concerning the future of the poles and the possibility that they be donated to the city.
Cox initially said the plan was to keep the poles for spare parts.
However, officials from Musco Sports Lighting, who is installing the new lights, told Cox that the best option would be to use the poles, but replace the incandescent lights with LED lights.
“Sometimes they were good at the last football game, but didn’t come back on at the next one,” Cox explained noting that getting a truck down onto the track to fix the lights could damage the track.
Cox said the cost of the two LED light systems for the track is $2,000 each.
Under the agreement with the city, while moving the poles, the city workers will also transport the two light poles from Campbell Field to the track.
The board authorized Cox in February to move forward with the purchase of new lights for Campbell Field.
Cox said lights project was approximate $300,000 and was paid for out of money that had to be used for facilities.
“If we don’t use those funds, we lose them,” Cox said.
In addition to new lights, Cox said the concrete stands have undergone sealing to fix leaks that are flowing into the locker rooms.
“Both of the locker rooms leak like a sieve,” Cox said.
Corbin is scheduled to open the 2021 football season on Aug. 20 against Rhea County, Tennessee in the Pigskin Classic.
The board also approved the job description for the Corbin Athletic Director position.
The position is now vacant with Steve Jewell taking the position as high school principal.
Among the requirements listed in the job description, the new athletic director will be required to have a presence at all home sports events, whether it is the AD, or an approved designee.
