With the conclusion of the recent 13th Region championship tournaments at the Corbin Arena, the 2018-19 high school basketball season has officially ended for all of the News Journal’s coverage area teams.
With that being said, this week we take a look back on the past few months and determine who was worthy of receiving All-County team honors.
All-County Most Valuable Player (girls) – Lillie Hall, Jr. from Williamsburg
Hall was always going to be counted on to be the Lady Jackets’ top playmaker in 2018-19, but that became especially true after senior teammate Lillie Abbott’s unfortunate season-ending injury that occurred during the first round of this year’s 13th Region All “A” Classic at Red Bird.
A key player for Williamsburg since her middle school days, Hall continued to add to an already impressive resume this past winter. She led her team in scoring with nearly 20 points per game, and was a tenacious defender.
Hall approaches the game with an intensity that has served her well during her time in orange and white. Chances are good that she’ll find herself in the All-County MVP conversation once more around this same time next year.
All-County Most Valuable Player (boys) – Chase Sanders, Sr. from Corbin
Many eyes were on Sanders coming into the 2018-19 season, and rightfully so. Making a name for himself as a dangerous threat to shoot the ball from virtually anywhere on the court, he led the Redhounds to 21 wins and an appearance in the regional semifinals as a senior.
Sanders finished the season as Corbin’s top scorer by a wide margin, averaging over 20 points per game. Not afraid to take over a contest at any given time, he served his teammates well as an outspoken, and at times emotional leader. Mostly he just let his tremendous playmaking ability do the talking for him, however.
