Who said it couldn’t be done? The win that will be heard around the mountains Friday night when to the Williamsburg Lady Jackets. Call it what you may, but simply said…Williamsburg out-played the South Laurel Lady Cardinals on its home floor and pulled off a 58-50 win.
It was the first district win period for the coach Jim Rains and the Lady Jackets since South Laurel was added to the district three years ago. “We had some great senior leadership out there tonight,” said Rains. “I can’t say enough about these girls.”
Rains felt handling the South Laurel pressure was the difference in the game. “We didn’t let them rattle us tonight,” said Rains.
It wasn’t a fluke either, Williamsburg led most of the game. South Laurel jumped out to a 5-2 lead but a basket by senior Cecily Sears and Whitney Rains pushed Williamsburg ahead. They led at the end of the first quarter, 9-7 and only once did South Laurel regain the lead.
That lead came in the final quarter when the Lady Cardinals took a 36-35 lead, but Williamsburg remained calm and scored the next six points for a 41-36 score.
Williamsburg would extend that lead to ten (52-42) with 1:35 left on a pair of free throws by Kat Hoffman, who had a game-high 23 points. Samantha Burr tossed in 20 points in the win.
