KY 1259 Bridge Over I-75 in Whitley County Scheduled for Demolition

Date:

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of upcoming bridge demolition work on KY 1259 over Interstate 75 in Whitley County. This work is part of the ongoing I-75 widening project between Exit 25 and Exit 29 in Laurel and Whitley counties, which is designed to improve safety and traffic flow along this heavily traveled corridor.

The existing KY 1259 bridge must be removed because it does not provide the necessary width and clearance to accommodate the additional travel lanes and improved roadway geometry associated with the interstate widening. The structure is being replaced to meet current design standards and allow for construction of the widened interstate.

Interstate 75 Detours

Temporary traffic impacts will occur on I-75 during the demolition:

  • Southbound I-75: Monday, February 9, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Northbound I-75: Tuesday, February 10, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

During both closures, I-75 traffic will be detoured via Exit 29 or Exit 25, with assistance from law enforcement.

KY 1259 Closure

  • KY 1259 over I-75 will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday, February 9.
  • Message boards will be placed in advance to notify motorists of the closure.
  • Detour signage for KY 1259 will be installed prior to the closure.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow all posted detour routes and traffic control devices while crews safely complete this phase of the I-75 widening project.

Motorists are advised to expect delays, use caution during this period and be aware of signage, road crews and other drivers.

The date, time, and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Motorists can access travel and traffic conditions at http://goky.ky.gov or contribute their own reports at www.waze.com or via the Waze mobile application.
