Hundreds turn out for Jones funeral Friday
Hundreds of people turned out at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church Friday morning for the funeral of former Williamsburg Police Chief and Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Russell Jones, who died Saturday after a long fight against cancer.
Jones spent nearly 30 years in law enforcement. In 2014, he received the Medal of Honor and the Purple Heart for his actions to end a shooting incident in 1981 at a concert near Corbin. Jones drew the gunman’s fire allowing others to get away. Although wounded, he tactically repositioned and returned fire mortally wounding his attacker.
Following Jones funeral, numerous people lined US25W from the church to Highland Park Cemetery in honor Jones, including a Corbin Fire Department ladder truck that had a large American flag hanging from its outstretched ladder.
