Four years from now, Williamsburg’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3167 Commander Alvey Gregory will be the man over all VFW posts in Kentucky.
Gregory was recently elected as Kentucky Surgeon, which is the start of a four-year process to become the commander of the Kentucky VFW.
Gregory will then serve as judge advocate, junior vice commander and senior vice commander before assuming the commander post.
“The Commander is responsible for all the VFW posts in the state of Kentucky,” Gregory said. “We have 13 districts and 130 posts.”
According to Wikipedia, Congress chartered the non-profit VFW organization in 1936. The organization works on behalf of American veterans to lobby Congress for better veterans’ healthcare and benefits.
The VFW also maintains a nationwide organization of employees and volunteers to help veterans with disability claims.
Gregory is the first Whitley Countian to hold the post of state surgeon, and said he ran because he wants to “work for my veterans.”
“I want to get out across this state, and visit these great veterans,” Gregory said. “You’d be surprised how many you meet.”
Gregory said the position is something that he has been working towards for a long time.
“You do a lot of campaigning to get this job. I traveled all over this state to do that,” he said. “I went to all the districts. It’s a lot of travel, but I enjoy it and enjoy the camaraderie.”
