Dr. Robert Lumsden, a dedicated educator and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2025. He was born on October 25, 1950, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, to Edith and Elmer Lumsden.
Robert is proceeded in death by his parents, and brother, Elmer “Ducky” Lumsden.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Sallie Lumsden; their two daughters, Emily Coleman and Jennifer Lumsden; and his brother, Wayne Lumsden. He was a proud grandfather to Raymond, Brandon, and Kimberly Hargrave, and William and Lorelei Coleman, as well as a great-grandfather to Jackson Hargrave.
Robert’s distinguished career in education spanned decades, beginning as a woodshop teacher and culminating in his role as Associate Commissioner of Education in Kentucky. After retiring, Robert continued his mission to improve education by traveling across the country, working with at-risk school districts to enhance reading and math achievement.
Robert touched countless lives through his work and family. He will be deeply missed but remembered for his unwavering commitment to learning and love for those around him.
A graveside memorial service will be at 4:00 PM Monday, August 4, at the Highland Park Cemetery Ellison Addition with Rev. Scott Cannon officiating.
