The Whitley County Lady Colonels snapped a two-game losing skid with an easy win over the Lynn Camp Lady Cats last week at Lawson Gym.
Whitley County (14-7) ran out to an 18-0 lead before Lynn Camp’s Stephanie Kidd hit a pair of free throws at the 5:38 mark of the second quarter.
The Lady Colonels scored the only points in the first quarter, taking a 13-0 lead in the game. Five different players got in the scorebook in the first eight minutes with senior Stephanie McCullah tossing in five points, one a three-pointer that gave the Lady Colonels a 9-0 lead.
Holly Jones opened the second period with a three that pushed the Colonels ahead 16-0. A basket by 6-2 junior Amanda Brimm gave Whitley County its 18-0 lead but Kidd was soon to put the Lady Cats on the scoreboard.
The Colonels pushed the lead out to 21 points (25-4) on a pair of free throws by Brimm, but Lynn Camp would cut into the lead over the next two minutes. A Christy Helton basket and a three pointer by Chelsea Grubb got some fire under the Lady Wildcats. They trailed at the half, 32-11.
It was a sluggish second half for the Lady Colonels as Lynn Camp outscored Whitley County, 11-9 in the third. Whitley County gained a point in the final quarter but the Lady Wildcats took the second half, 19-18.
“It was kind of sloppy after we got the lead, but we played a lot of kids,” said Whitley County coach Larry Anderson. “It’s hard to keep the momentum going when you do that.”
“Sometimes when you play a lot of kids like that, it’s hard to get into the games,” Anderson said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well. For the last several games we have not shot the ball like we are capable of shooting.”
“We didn’t go down and get good shots off,” said Anderson. “We didn’t move the ball with extra passes, didn’t hit the boards like I thought we should have. Our execution wasn’t every good offensively tonight.”
Holly Jones led the winners with 11 points while Brimm tossed in 10 points.
The Lady Colonels have been off since the win over Lynn Camp. They will play the Southwestern Lady Warriors Friday night at 6 p.m. There will be a boy-girl doubleheader.
