Camille Overley (Corbin) defeated Abby Wheatley (Whitefield Aca.) in round one 6-0, 6-1.

Next week coverage area athletes will compete for regional baseball and softball championships, as well as state track and tennis titles.
The 2019 13th Region baseball tournament will kickoff Monday, May 27 at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. The Corbin Redhounds will face Bell County in game one at 11:00 am. Knox Central vs. Clay County will come next, followed by Middlesboro vs. Barbourville and North Laurel vs. Whitley County in the night game. Semifinal round games will be at 5:30 and 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 28, and the championship game will be played Wednesday, May 29 at 7:00 pm.

It was a busy night in our coverage area Tuesday, with a district baseball champion crowned, several regional tennis championships decided and track & field teams hitting the road to compete for a chance to appear at state.
Starting with baseball, this year's 50th District championship game between Corbin and Whitley County was another classic in a series that has become well known for producing plenty of memorable moments. It didn't start out that way, however, as the Redhounds were able to get out to a commanding 9-0 lead after a three-run bottom of the first inning, a five-run bottom of the third and a one-run bottom of the fourth.

As reported in last week’s edition of the News Journal, a total of 18 high school tennis players from the coverage area are slated to compete in this year’s KHSAA state championships in Lexington.
The tournaments will kick off tomorrow (Thursday) with Corbin’s Katherine Niemeier taking on Carrie Beckman of Sacred Heart at 8:00 a.m. at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing Tennis Complex.
Whitley County’s Anna Grace Zehr will take on Charity Nickel from Somerset, also at 8:00 a.m. at Boone/Downing.
Corbin’s Samantha Spady is scheduled to face Savannah Kruse from Bullitt East at 9:15 a.m.

The Corbin and Whitley County tennis programs have enjoyed much success this spring, and now they both will cap off the 2018 season by sending several athletes on to next week’s KHSAA state championships in Lexington.
When all was said and done Monday evening at Corbin High School both the Redhounds and Lady Hounds were once again crowned 13th Region champions, sending a total of eleven competitors on to state.
The Colonels and Lady Colonels brought home region runner-up honors, with a total of seven athletes qualifying for state competition.

A familiar face has been chosen to fill the head coaching position left vacant by the resignation of David Estes earlier this month. David Halcomb has been chosen to lead the Lady Colonels Basketball Program at Whitley County High School. He will be resigning as head coach of girls’ volleyball and the tennis team at the end of the 2018 season in order to assume the head basketball coaching position.

1. The Corbin Redhounds’ run to the Class 3A state football championship: Undoubtedly, the biggest sports story of the year was Corbin football’s 13-2 season that included the program’s first appearance in a state championship game since 2002.
The football Hounds featured a talented cast of both seasoned veterans and young up-and-comers in 2017. The combination was enough to get the team over the hump, defeating Louisville Central in the state semifinals after losing to Belfry in week 14 of both the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

The 13th Region was well represented at the state level once again this year, with a total of twelve coverage area players advancing to compete in last week’s KHSAA championships in Lexington.
Corbin had two teams in the boys doubles bracket – region champions Peyton Hamlin/Brady Keith, and the pairing of Seth and Zane Maguet. Hamlin and Keith were defeated in round one last Thursday morning by Michael Ioffe and Spencer Strelsov (5) of DuPont Manual 6-4, 6-2, while the Maguets were defeated in round one by Chandler Nguyen and Wes Patterson of Russell 6-0, 6-3.
