May 5 was a big day for Corbin High School athletics as three graduating seniors signed full four-year scholarships to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.
The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department responded to 1,134 calls during the month of April.
Deputies issued 77 total citations for 149 various counts ranging from violations to criminal charges. There were a total of 69 arrests, including 17 criminal arrests plus warrants served, according to a sheriff’s department release.
The sheriff’s department opened 41criminal cases, including 12 drug related cases, one assault case, 11 theft cases, and 16 other cases.
Deputies also worked 16 total collisions including one injury crash.

The Corbin Police Department answered 1,074 calls during the month of April.
Officers issued 137 total citations for traffic or criminal offenses, and made 72 total arrests. Out of those arrests, there were 21 criminal arrests and 51 warrants served.
Corbin Police opened 39 criminal cases during April for things such as theft, assaults, etc.
Officers responded to 54 total collisions in April including two injury crashes.

A Rockholds man received a lifetime prison sentence Wednesday on federal kidnapping charges.
George Oscar Messer, 62, was sentenced to life in prison by United States District Judge Robert E. Wier, on two counts of kidnapping, in which Messer was convicted of by a jury following a trial in January.
According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky, evidence presented at trial revealed the kidnappings were motivated by an unsuccessful drug transaction, during which Messer’s son, Jake Messer, 38, and his co-conspirators lost $10,000. Following a two-day trial, a Woodbine man facing a murder charge stemming from an April 2021 fatal crash was found not-guilty Thursday evening in Laurel County Circuit Court.

A Corbin man , who was arrested late Friday night by a Kentucky Fish & Wildlife officer, is facing numerous charges, including third-degree assault for allegedly spitting on the arresting officer.
Travis Blackwood, 28, was arrested at the Hightop Boat Ramp after attempting to elude the officer. According to an arrest citation obtained from the Whitley County District Court Clerk, the officer was patrolling at the boat ramp when noticing two individuals in dark clothing attempting to hide behind the bathroom building.
