Whitley County Golden Alert issued for man needing medication

A Golden Alert D (Medication Required) has been issued for a missing Whitley County man. Stephen Slusher, 26, has been missing Saturday, Aug. 21, at 1:15 p.m. and was last seen at a residence at 27 Childers Road in Williamsburg. Slusher is described as a white 5’11” male weighing about 140 pounds. He has a light complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. Slusher has a tattoo on his left arm, and a tattoo on his left wrist. He was last seen wearing a royal blue T-shirt, light colored blue jeans, and Skechers slip-on shoes size 8.5 – 9.0. His T-shirt was oversized. Whitley County has first ‘breakthrough’ COVID–19 death

The Whitley County Health Department has announced the county’s first breakthrough COVID–19 related death. Whitley County Public Health Director Marcy Rein said the adult over the age of 65 died Tuesday. “That person was fully vaccinated,” Rein said noting that the individual was hospitalized at the time of death. That death marks the third COVID–19 death in Whitley County in the last two weeks. Two reported last week involved unvaccinated individuals. As of Thursday, Rein said there are 213 active COVID–19 cases in Whitley County, of which three are hospitalized. Corbin Board of Education recommends masks for faculty, staff, students, visitors

When classes resume at Corbin Independent Schools on Aug. 19, faculty, staff, students and visitors are encouraged to wear masks. At a special called meeting of the Corbin Board of Education Thursday night, the board approved updated guidance on COVID–19 safety recommending that individuals follow the latest guidelines on masks and COVID–19 safety. No injuries during four-vehicle crash on Main Street

No one was injured during a four-vehicle accident along Main Street in downtown Corbin that occurred between Second and Third streets shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday. Corbin Police Officer Rob Jones said that the driver of a Toyota Prius briefly looked down at his phone and sideswiped a Subaru Outback and and Buick Century, which were both parked along Main Street. The impacted knocked the Buick into the back of a Ford Edge, which was parked in front of it. No charges were filed in connection with the incident. Whitley County Judicial Center closed because of water damage

The Whitley County Judicial Center is expected to be closed this week due to a water leak. Circuit Court Clerk Gary Barton said the building has suffered significant damage from a leak that poured water into his office. The staff in Williamsburg will be working from home. The clerk's office in Corbin will continue to operate normally for those needing to renew driver's licenses, file paperwork and do other business.      

Colonels headed to Lexington after 6-5 win over Raceland

The Whitley County Colonels Baseball team is headed to the elite eight in Lexington. The Colonels defeated Raceland Saturday in the semi-state round at Morehead State University, 6-5. Mason Croley drove in what would prove to the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners at second and third and one out, Croley lined a triple to left field, scoring Sam Harp and Bryce Anderson. Laurel River Lake reopens Spillway Beach for swimming Friday

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District announced Friday that Spillway Beach at Laurel River Lake is reopening today for swimming. The Corps closed Spillway Beach June 4 due to E. coli detected in the water. Tests received late Thursday indicated conditions returned to acceptable levels. “Public health and safety are always our main concerns, so we routinely take water samples at Corps of Engineers developed swimming areas,” said Jonathan Friedman, resource manager at Laurel River Lake and Lake Cumberland. Whitley County’s 13th Region Tournament Semifinal game against Knox Central Monday night looked bleak early, before the Colonels scored eight unanswered runs en route to the 8-5 victory. Colonels’ starting pitcher Bryce Anderson struggled beginning in the second inning, walking two hitters and then hitting another to load the bases, before the third walk of the inning gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Steve Jewell named new CHS Principal

Corbin High School Assistant Principal Steve Jewell has been selected as the new Corbin High School Principal. Jewell will take over on August 1, which is the date that Crawford’s retirement becomes effective. I am extremely humbled and proud to represent Corbin High School,” Jewell said. “We have a great family of educators to work with and I look forward to the challenges ahead.” Jewell is a 1983 graduate of Corbin High School. He holds a Bachelor’s and Masters degree from Tennessee Technological University and a Rank I in Principal Leadership from Eastern Kentucky University.
