The second annual winter blanket drive for seniors is currently collecting twin/throw-sized blankets for approximately 400 seniors at Williamsburg Health & Rehabilitation, Corbin Health & Rehabilitation, Williamsburg VFW, and the Williamsburg Senior Center.
Amber Hale, the organizer of the drive, was inspired to start this initiative after participating with her mom in a similar event in Ohio.
“The annual senior blanket drive is an idea I borrowed from the Amelia Business Association in Ohio, where my mom served as president. They orchestrated an annual blanket drive yearly, and my mom and I were annual participants,” Hale explained. “When we moved south to Whitley County, we quickly realized that one of the things we missed so much about Ohio was organizing the blanket drive each year, so I decided to start it here.”
Last year, the goal was to provide blankets to just Williamsburg Health & Rehabilitation, but they ended up collecting over 400 blankets, allowing them to reach more seniors in need.
This year, they aim to collect 400 blankets.
“I recently did a petting zoo at the Williamsburg nursing home. Noticing a lot of the residents with blankets gifted to them last year lay across their laps definitely brought a tear to my eye,” said Hale.
Donations of new throw or twin-sized blankets are due by Dec. 16 and can be dropped off at The Groomer at Clayton Geneva. For questions or more details, contact Amber Hale at 513-913-0325.
