Shoplifting suspect leads W’burg police on 100 mph chase

A Lexington woman remains incarcerated in the Whitley County Detention Center after allegedly shoplifting from the Williamsburg Walmart and leading police on a vehicle pursuit that reached a speed of 100 mph before ending just inside Tennessee.

An early-morning traffic stop Saturday in Corbin led police to a home in Knox County where a mother claims she left her children with a man she didn't know. Police discovered numerous narcotics, drug paraphernalia and even an active meth leb when they arrived at the residence.

Representatives of the estate of Cassandra Byrd, who was killed in June when she was hit by an SUV on Interstate 75 after escaping from the custody of a Whitley County Sheriff's deputy, have filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against Whitley County, the Whitley County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Lawrence Hodge and Deputy Ben Hodge.
