The 13th Region Volleyball Tournament will begin Monday at Lynn Camp High School with the winner advancing to the KHSAA State High School Tournament at Louisville’s Valley High School.
Jackson County (21-13) will play Knox Central (11-13) in the first game of the night. This will be the first meeting of the year between the two teams. Jackson County is coming in with a three-game win streak. Knox Central has won five of their last seven games. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
Defending champion Corbin (26-8) will take on Harlan High in the second game at 6:30. The Lady Redhounds are led by the veteran senior Vanessa Wiseman, the two-time 13th Region Player of the Year. She gets plenty of help on the front line by sophomore Chelsea Brock. Allison Worthy, a sophomore, is one of the top servers in the region.
Corbin was 18-1 in the region this year.
Tuesday’s night the tournament resumes with Harlan County (16-9) taking on an improved (9-13) Clay County team.
In the nightcap, it will be the game of games as Whitley County (27-6), boasting the best record in the region will take on South Laurel (17-6).
The Lady Colonels have won 12 of their last 13 games with the lone loss being to South Laurel. The teams split during the season.
Whitley County is led by 2011 Rookie of the Year Briana Maynes along with libero Alexa Chaffman and outside hitter Taylor Dingess.
South Laurel (17-6) has won 12 of their last 16 games, but three of those losses were to the Corbin Lady Redhounds. The other loss was to Jackson County.
The Lady Cardinals are led by the hard-hitting Taylor Arthur and Cassandra Johnson on the frontline.
The semifinals will be played Wednesday night with the championship game slated for Thursday at 6 p.m.
