The 13th Region pairings were set at Harlan County High School Saturday morning with the tournament tipping off Monday night.
The Corbin Redhounds (24-6) will open the tournament against the Yellow Jackets of Middlesboro (15-13). The teams met back in Jan. with the Redhounds taking a 68-51 win. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m.
The second game will match the Clay County Tigers (23-6) against the Barbourville Tigers (19-11). Clay County has won 12 games in a row including Friday nights win over North Laurel, 64-58.
Tuesday night will find the Harlan County Black Bears, the preseason favorite, hosting South Laurel.
South Laurel, the only team bringing in a losing record, 13-16, is considered by many as a dark horse. The Cardinals are 3-5 in the month of Feb., but has played a demanding schedule.
The second game will see Knox Central (17-13) taking on defending regional champion, North Laurel, 15-15.
The semifinals will be played Friday with the championship game scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The girl’s tournament will begin Wednesday night, as Clay County, the region favorite, will take on 50th District runner-up, Whitley County. The Lady Colonels, 19-10, beat the Tigers early in the season, 58-55.
The Lady Tigers have won 13 of their final 14 games including an upset of #8 Elizabethtown, 48-47. Their only loss came against Madison Central.
The Lady Colonels won their first eight games of the season and was ranked as high as ninth in the state when injuries started hampering the team.
They are 5-4 in the month of Feb., but lost a pair of thrillers to Bell County and Harlan County on the road in the last week of the regular season.
The second game Wednesday night will match Bell County (25-5) against Lynn Camp (23-9). The teams didn’t meet during the regular season.
Thursday night, the Barbourville Lady Tigers, 21-10, take on Harlan County at 6:15 p.m., followed by Corbin (24-8) and North Laurel (6-25).
The semifinals will be played Saturday at 12:30 and 2:00, with the championship game Monday at 7 p.m.
