A Whitley County Grand Jury handed down a 21-count indictment against a former Cumberland Inn general manager Friday morning for allegedly stealing over $8,000 last year.

A local car lot owner was killed last Monday night in a tragic accident near the 26-mile mark on I-75 near Corbin.
Larry W. Rogers, 65, of Faber, died as a result of injuries from a crash that happened at about 10:44 p.m.

The 13^th Region semifinals are set. Corbin will play the Clay County Tigers at 3:00 p.m. Saturday while North Laurel takes on South Laurel at 4:30. I expect a close contest between the Redhounds and the Tigers, but I can’t see North Laurel giving South Laurel much of a game.

March Madness…it’s here. I’ve been counting down the days for the last several weeks. March seems like the fastest month of the year. This year the month starts with the 13^th Region Tournament, then goes into the girls state basketball tournament followed by March 17^th the opening day of the boys’ state basketball tournament.

January and February are cold dreary times of the year that are highlighted only from my point of view by basketball season, both high school and college.

Now the calendar turns to March and tournament time. Actually this year district tournaments began the last week of February and several high school teams have already seen their dreams come to an end with a heart breaking loss.

If fans attending the 13^th Region Basketball Tournament this week expected their respective team to get an easy draw in Sunday’s regional meeting at THE ARENA, they were surely disappointed.

“Anybody in the region you draw is going to be tough to play,” said Corbin Coach Tony Pietrowski. “You don’t come in here really thinking you are going to get anybody that a pushover.”

Coming into the 13^th Region Tournament Whitley County Coach Larry Anderson hoped his team would show a bit of offense and get on a roll. That didn’t happen Monday night in the first-round of the tournament as the Harlan County Lady Bears, 45-32, ousted the Lady Colonels.

I woke up this morning to more of the same...breaking news of the earthquake in Chile. To be followed by a tsunami in Hawaii and parts of the west coast here in the U.S. This, after record-breaking snows in parts of the northeast, plus rain and mud slides in California, a chronic problem of that state that is also besieged by forest fires on a regular basis.
