Corbin man arrested for decades old sex crimes

A Corbin man has been arrested in Knox County on sexual abuse and sodomy charges stemming from incidents that allegedly happened in 1980 and 1992, respectively.

John E. Sutherland, 72, was arrested Friday following an investigation by Kentucky State Police Det. Jason York.

According to the warrants filed in Knox District Court, Sutherland is accused of sexually abusing a minor child on at least two different occasions on or about Jan. 1, 1980.

Sutherland allegedly sodomized a second victim, who was also a minor at the time on at least three different occasions on or about Oct. 1, 1992.

York took Sutherland into custody at his home on Bishop Street. He was lodged in the Knox County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash bond.

Trooper Shane Jacobs, public affairs officer at KSP Post 10 in Harlan, said the investigation began recently when the two alleged victims came forward and spoke with police.

“They told essentially the same story involving the same perpetrator,” Jacobs said, noting Sutherland had recently moved back to the area.

Jacobs said the investigation is continuing and more charges may be forthcoming.

First off I would like to know how living in the same area for over 30 years is considered to be moving back. Next, where is the actual proof concerning the allegations surrounding this man? Seems as though they've already sealed his fate; he has been arrested on what two ALLEGED victims had to say. The statement made by officer Jacob points out that two alleged victims had basically the same story about the same man, however I would like to also point out that this article written by Dean Manning states "...investigation began recently when the two alleged victims came forward and spoke with police." this sounds to me as though the two alleged victims know each other and came forth together so the fact that they had the same story doesn't amaze me or the family. I also ponder on as to why the two alleged victims waited over two decades to bring up these allegations. Seems as though there is more to this case than what meets the eye. I would love to hear to some facts revolving around all the alleged allegations being made concerning Sutherland. This article strikes me as extremely bias, where are the family’s statements concerning a husband, father, and last but not least a grandfather of four legal grandchildren who he has personally helped raised and shaped into the outstanding individuals they are today. I know each grandchild personally and never have I heard or seen any type of inappropriate behavior, contact, or language conveyed towards any of them growing up. I would also like to know why Sutherland's stand point hasn’t been revealed. He is revered by the community and if there was anyone who would go an extra mile for someone it would be Sutherland.
