"I believe" in the Corbin Redhounds

My wife, Sharon and I were able to attend the reunion of Corbin High School for the class of 1958 through 1962. It afforded us the opportunity to spend time with our good friends, Joe and Sue Gieszl and Winston and Mary Phipps.

It was a busy weekend, full of memories and renewing old acquaintances. This was an era that produced many outstanding athletes in both football and basketball. Don Estep put together films that former Redhound football player D.L. Lynch had preserved over the years and presented it Saturday afternoon.

Don narrated as the film rolled on with a background of 50’s and 60’s music. I heard someone remark that Don could read the phone book and make it sound good.

I had the good fortune on Friday to run into the daughter of the late Corbin Coach Bill Tucker; Penny was a young grade schooler when Coach Tucker led the Redhounds to the undefeated season of 1955 and on to a state championship. Coach Tucker’s other daughter, Billie Rae married Gayle “Dago” Phillips, who played on that ’55 team. “Dago’s” sister, Jesse is a big Redhounds fan.

This year’s Redhound football team steamrolled McCreary Central 64-6 Thursday night and now will face Bell County Friday night at Campbell Field.

I look for it to be a great game and I believe the Redhounds will come out on top. I know that is the kiss of death since my picks are the worst.

The Kentucky Wildcats put Patrick Towles in the game Saturday and he drove the team to a touchdown. I wonder if the coaching staff has ever noticed Towles in practice.

The basketball program at the University of Kentucky continues to progress under the leadership of John Calipari. The Harrison twins, Aaron and Andrew, committed to Kentucky last week and certainly should provide a nucleus for the 2013-’14 season.

The last 25 years have gone very quickly, and I have really enjoyed writing my column, I want to thank everyone for the kind remarks I have received from readers. I wish you all the very best.
