A Whitley County Detention Center inmate died Wednesday morning at Jellico Community Hospital.
Ronald Shannon Lawson, 26, of Shelby Hurst Road, Williamsburg, became unresponsive at 6:30 a.m.
Deputy jailers started CPR and notified Whitley County EMS, which transported Lawson to the Jellico Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:10 a.m.
The cause of death is pending the autopsy report.
Lawson was being held on a $7,500 cash bond after being arrested on July 24 by Williamsburg police for speeding, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol/drugs, and first-degree possession of a controlled substance.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges during his July 26 arraignment before District Judge Cathy Prewitt, who scheduled an Aug. 2 preliminary hearing in his case.
Lawson is survived by his wife, Shawnda Lawson, of Williamsburg and two children.
He was a member of Hanging Rock Baptist Church.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time, and will be announced later by Croley Funeral Home.
Lawson will be laid to rest in the Freeman Cemetery in the Hanging Rock Community of Williamsburg.
No further details are available at this time.
seriously what is going on at the whitley county jail? it seems like someone dies there once a month. too many people are dying. you dont here about this happening anywhere else. les moses should take over right now and try to get things set straight because someone is not taking care of those boys like they should.
Something is definately wrong here. There is no reason for anyone to be dying while in jail here. He was so young too.
I have been wondering for some times what is wrong with the jail. There are just too many deaths and accidents there. Maybe the change in leadership will be for the best.
is any one out there listen or watching? what is going on inside the dentention center? where is the nurse? why are deputy giving medication and administering insulin someone needs to take control.
something is not right at that jail

I think someone should contact and put the heat on the State Dept of Corrections to investigate the Whitley County Detention Center. Too many needless deaths there.
what a sad state of affairs at our jail. just pray you dont get arrested for pi or something like that. you may end up dead if you go there. beg them to take you to laurel co.
It is very sad this young mans medical needs should have been taken care of, anyone who is familiar with diabetes knows it is not something you neglect. I presently have a nephew detained in the detention center that is also a severe diabetic along with other health problems. And yes I know that everyone there has done something to be locked up, but everyone of those people are someones child, mom, dad, brother, family member. Unfortunately we as a society have a long way to go in our caring and humanity. Yes they do have severe problems at the detention center and as a member of the court said when I expressed concerns about the medical care that the inmates get the reply I received was " They do what they want to up there" not a good answer is it. My sympathy and prayers go out to this young mans family.
'They do what they want to up there'. What kind of answer is that? And the court is not even concerned about that. That is so horrible. My sympathy to the family.
